First Patient Leaves Hospital with Full Artificial Heart

A man in his forties is the first to leave Saint Vincent's Hospital in Sydney with a fully artificial heart after over 100 days of living with it. This groundbreaking procedure is a significant step forward for artificial heart technology and patient care.

First Patient Leaves Hospital with Full Artificial Heart

Developed medical technologies have allowed men at the age of forty to become the first person to receive a full artificial heart. This was announced at the St. Vincent's hospital in Sydney. The patient was suffering from cardiac insufficiency and lived with an artificial heart – a titanium blood pump – for over 100 days, until in March he underwent surgery to transplant a real heart.

In November 2024, the patient underwent surgery to install an artificial heart as a temporary measure while waiting for a donor organ – the first operation of this kind in Australia. In February 2025, he was allowed to be discharged from the hospital with the device, and in the current March, he received a donor heart.

The hospital stated that the patient set a record for the duration of survival with an artificial heart. This is a significant step in the development of technologies for artificial hearts, allowing people to live with devices without the need for the transplant of a native organ.
