Sydney Shooting Death Toll Rises to 16

The number of fatalities in the shooting at Bondi Beach, Sydney, has risen to 16, police in the Australian state of New South Wales reported on Monday. Authorities stated that 14 people died at the scene and two others in a hospital. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87. At least 40 people were injured, with five in critical condition. Police identified the attackers as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. The 50-year-old shooter, who died at the scene, had a firearms license and legally possessed six guns. Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon officially declared the incident a terrorist attack, adding that investigations into the motive are ongoing. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as "an act of pure evil" and pledged to combat antisemitism. One of the attackers had previously been investigated for ties to an Islamic State (ISIS) cell. Australian leaders have agreed to strengthen gun laws in response to the shooting.
