Raygun Defends Breakdance Passion Despite Controversy

Rachel Gunn, known as Raygun, the Australian representative for breakdancing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, clarified in a recent interview that she has no intention of leaving this sport even though she will not participate in certain competitions in the future. Gunn, 37, expressed that she will continue to be part of exhibitions and jams, emphasizing that breakdancing for her is more than just a sport, it is a culture, a community, and a way of life from which one cannot withdraw.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, breakdancing made its debut and attracted attention for the freedom of improvisation and innovation it allows due to the absence of defined standards like in other sports. Despite receiving a zero from the judges, Raygun's performance went viral on the internet.

The athlete acknowledged that breakdancing can generate mixed opinions but emphasized her passion for this form of art and her ongoing commitment to break culture. In a statement to an Australian broadcaster, Raygun mentioned feeling disappointed by the controversy surrounding her participation in the Paris Games, leading to misunderstandings about her possible withdrawal from competitions.

Despite the criticism and mockery received on social media for her unconventional style, which includes movements like imitating kangaroo jumps, Raygun will remain active in the breakdancing world and will continue participating in shows and events related to hip-hop culture.
