Poland Advances to United Cup Semifinals with Win Over Australia

Poland defeated Australia 2-1 to advance to the semifinals of the United Cup, the mixed tennis tournament being held in the Australian city of Perth. On Friday at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, the European team faced the hosts after qualifying for the quarterfinals as leaders of Group F. Meanwhile, the Oceanic teams did the same in Group D. According to the Argentine News Agency, as the tournament is being held in Australia, the Poles were at a distinct disadvantage of being absolute visitors in a venue packed with Australians. The series was opened by world number 2 Iga Świątek against world number 32, Maya Joint. The Polish player showcased her full class and, in two sets, defeated the Australian 6-1 and 6-1 in just 57 minutes of play. In the second match, the men's singles, world number 6 Alex de Minaur suffered against world number 83 Hubert Hurkacz, but managed to win 6-4, 4-6, and 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes, thus tying the series for Australia. In doubles, the Polish mixed pair of Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zieliński was dominant and easily defeated their Australian counterparts, Storm Hunter and John-Patrick Smith. In one hour and four minutes, the Europeans won 6-4 and 6-0. Thus, Poland eliminated the hosts and advanced to the semifinals of the United Cup, a stage that the Poles have always reached in all editions of this tournament since its inception in 2023. This Saturday, Poland will face the United States in the first semifinal at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, while in the same venue, Switzerland will play Belgium to determine the other finalist of this fourth edition of the United Cup.
