A new season of Formula 1 has begun with free practices for the Australian Grand Prix, where Liam Lawson, the new driver for Red Bull Racing, faced a difficult start. This is the first Formula 1 Grand Prix for the New Zealander, who will race alongside Max Verstappen following the departure of Sergio 'Checo' Pérez from Red Bull.
In the free practices for the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Lawson finished in the last positions and was nicknamed 'Slowson'. During the first session, he finished in 16th place and in the second in 17th, unable to improve his position. Issues with the Red Bull RB21 car have caused complications for Lawson and Verstappen, who have faced difficulties with grip.
After the practices, Lawson mentioned: 'The first day on a new circuit we expected to have some work, but probably not this much.' He also pointed out that the car's grip has been a problem. On the other hand, Max Verstappen expressed that he is not surprised by the results and mentioned that they need to improve several situations.
During the practices, related to an incident in the pits, Lawson had a confrontation with Lando Norris, a McLaren driver. Lawson alleged that Norris forced him to continue on the grass. Meanwhile, Christian Horner, director of Red Bull Racing, defended Lawson's performance, arguing his lack of experience at the Albert Park Circuit. Although Horner highlighted that Lawson is adapting and showing good feelings.
