A few days before the Australian Grand Prix, Franco Colapinto's arrival at Alpine continues to generate buzz. Although he currently remains as a reserve driver, rumors about his imminent rise to Formula 1 persist. Australian media already assert that he will replace Jack Doohan.
The prestigious Sydney Morning Herald published an article explaining why the Argentine driver could occupy Alpine's second seat at any moment, joining Pierre Gasly. According to the outlet, "Tough? Undoubtedly. But that is the reality for Jack Doohan, whose debut at the Australian Grand Prix next weekend will have the sound of a ticking clock, a debut at Albert Park under the imposing shadow of Alpine's tiny new reserve driver, Franco Colapinto."
The commercial impact that Colapinto has generated for Alpine is also highlighted, something that could be crucial for his entry as a main driver. The Sydney Morning Herald mentioned that "Colapinto's popularity in a country lacking Formula 1 drivers (and without a Grand Prix since 1998) has generated significant commercial interest." Additionally, it was revealed that the Argentine sponsors backing Colapinto may have contributed $500,000 per race during his time at Williams.
Although it is still uncertain if Colapinto will take the seat at Alpine, the Australian press is already openly discussing an imminent replacement, casting doubt on Doohan's future with the team. With increasing pressure on the Australian, any mistake in the early races of the season could accelerate Colapinto's arrival in F1.
The Australian Grand Prix will return this weekend, with the race scheduled for Sunday at 1 AM (Argentina time), thus marking the start of a new Formula 1 season.
