The Australian driver Oscar Piastri, who made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2023, has renewed his contract with the British team for several years, securing his long-term future with the team. This announcement coincided with the lead-up to the first race of the 2025 season at the Australian Grand Prix, Piastri's home country, adding a special touch to the renewal.
Although no exact details were revealed about the contract extension, McLaren confirmed that the deal with Piastri spans a prolonged period, demonstrating the team's commitment to the young 23-year-old driver. "It feels great to know that I am part of McLaren's long-term vision," Piastri expressed upon confirming his renewal. "The team believed in me since we signed in 2022, and the journey we’ve had to bring McLaren back to the top of the sport has been incredible," he added.
During his first year with McLaren, Piastri achieved two crucial victories that contributed to the team's constructors' title. Additionally, he finished in fourth place in the drivers' standings, often outpacing his teammate Lando Norris and showing admirable consistency throughout the season. Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO, quickly praised Piastri following the announcement of his renewal. "It's an obvious decision to extend Oscar's contract," Brown commented. "We have the best driver lineup on the grid, and over the last two seasons, we have seen how much value Oscar brings to the team, both on and off the track."
Brown's statements reflect Piastri's importance for McLaren's future, which has big ambitions in Formula 1.
