Driver Liam Lawson explained that his crash in the 2025 Australian Grand Prix was the result of a joint strategy with the Red Bull Racing team to try to reach points positions. Despite the rain, he decided to stay on track with slick tires, hoping the conditions would improve. However, the accident took him into the wall on lap 47, ending his participation in the race.
Helmut Marko, Red Bull's advisor, did not blame Lawson for the incident and highlighted that the New Zealand driver does not have such a bad pace. Lawson's retirement occurred after he lost control of his car and crashed into the wall, with Sauber's Bortoleto also involved in the incident. Other drivers such as Carlos Sainz from Williams and Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin were also unable to complete the race due to similar crashes.
In statements, Helmut Marko mentioned that the decision to keep Lawson on track with slick tires was risky, and despite the outcome, he emphasized the driver’s pace. Although Lawson’s participation in the Australian GP was not representative of his ability, Marko expressed confidence in his resilience and future performance in the season.
Liam Lawson, for his part, apologized for the retirement, noting that the rain complicated the situation and caused them problems with the front tires. Despite the gamble on slick tires, the unpredictable weather did not play in their favor.
